the go giver – a bloke’s review

So I had this book sitting in my Amazon Kindle library for the longest, and… considering the latest circumstances, I felt compelled to read it.  ‘The Go-Giver’, the story of a bloke named Joe who learns how to be successful in life.  Not necessarily business, per se (though the story ends well), but life.

Personally starting from the premise that life is a gift, it resonated with me well.  There are five laws that are explored here, as follows:

1) The Law of Value: Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.
2) The Law of Compensation: Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.
3) The Law of Influence: Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first.
4) The Law of Authenticity: The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.
5) The Law of Receptivity: The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving.

I started the day today with the mindset of ‘what jobs are there for the taking?’, and now it seems that I’ll end it by asking, ‘what can I give to those whom are in need?’  the idea of starting a new business still burns brightly in my mind.  i feel like computer consulting is where i should be.  but instead of having people pay up front, I feel like I should give as much useful knowledge as I can.

i’ll still apply for regular work, most definitively.  but that, along with the ‘$100 startup’ book that I sort of skimmed through today that was also in my Kindle library, makes me wanna do something now!

maybe i’m a sucker for those kind of books.  i dunno.  but i do know some people to ask about consulting…
